Surveys th 2010: In the U.S. approximately 15 million Patients with COPD, 10 million Suffer from chronic bronchitis, and the rest suffered from emphysema, or a combination of both. Chronic obstructive airways disease and progressive dikarakterisir by the presence of airflow limitation that is irreversible, which is caused by chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. Incidence increases with increasing number of smokers (90% of patients with COPD is a smoker or ex-smoker).
Research has shown that long-term smoking can cause various effects, among others: the hair interfere with the movement of vibration of airway epithelium (respiratory epithelial cilliary) Inhibiting the function of alveolar macrophages, causing hypertrophy and hyperplasia of mucus-producing glands; also inhibit antiproteases and cause leukocytes release proteolytic enzymes acutely damaging elastin.
Symptoms: increased sputum volume, progressive shortness of breath, chest tightness, purulent sputum, increased need for bronchodilators, weakness, lethargy, tiredness.
The goal of therapy: Improving the state of airway obstruction, prevent and cope with an acute exacerbation, reduce the progression of disease, improve physical and mental condition, reduce the number of days absent from work, reduce length of hospital stay, lower mortality.
